By day, I am an aerospace structural engineer—my childhood dream job.
But as I've entered adulthood, I have spent so much time reflecting on how I want to spend my life. I keep coming back to two themes:
- I want to live my life in service to the world
- I don't want to waste my limited time alive
which has led me to develop the following mission to pursue:
Human flourishing for the benefit of Earth
I wrote about this mission in a short story.
Yes, this is a very broad mission. At the same time, my mission's breadth is enabling! It doesn’t box me into one impactful mission that I may outgrow like contribute to fixing the climate crisis (which used to be my mission).
But the reality is that my mission is broad and I won't have the impact I desire without pointed action, which I document here: /now and /ideas.
I have been blessed with a high feeling of agency. But I wasn't always 'happening to the world'. Up until I was 18, the world was 'happening to me'.
This all changed when I felt like I was handed a lifeline.
College admissions in the US happen in two phases: early admission and regular admission.
All of my friends got into NC State early and I was deferred. I had to wait three painful months to find out if I would be admitted to my dream program, or if I needed to find another way.
Long story short, I was eventually admitted. And this experience woke me up. Never again did I let good opportunities pass me by.
I started saying yes to everything—a habit I have needed to somewhat unlearn, but a habit that served me well. I got used to being in uncomfortable situations, but situations that pay dividends over time. I am reaping these benefits now in my current job.
The other thing that changed was my curiosity and willingness to improve myself.
Deferred admission made me realize I am so far from perfect. Not that I thought I was, but more that I can be better. This was ultimately the catalyst for a personal development journey that leads me many places, including here—documenting my journey and sharing my mission in hopes of meeting likeminded people.
This sense of agency gave me power to act on my curiosity. As a result, I began reading around this time. And after reading for years now, I realized the power of fiction and have started writing stories of my own.
I hope this gives you a glimpse into me. If anything struck a chord, contact me. And check out what I'm up to now and where I'm going next.
